What Does the Battery Do?

The battery under the hood of your vehicle stores a large amount of electricity. When you turn the key in the ignition or press the ignition button, the battery sends some of this electricity to the starter, which then turns over your vehicle’s engine. Once your engine has started, the alternator runs the electrical components while simultaneously recharging the battery. However, your vehicle’s battery will not last forever. Like all rechargeable batteries, it will slowly lose its ability to hold a charge.

Signs of a Dying Battery

In general, it will take a long time before you may even notice that your battery is dying. But, as it can hold less and less of a charge, you may see that you have to try to start your vehicle a few times before the engine turns over. Alternatively, you may have to turn the key in the ignition for longer before the engine turns on. If you’re uncertain, there is a potential way to tell: simply turn on your headlights or interior lights with the engine off. Then, turn the engine on and see what happens. If the lights are dim with the engine off and then get brighter, it’s likely that the battery is in bad shape or not receiving enough charge. This is because the battery powers the electrical components when the engine is off, but the alternator takes over after the battery is turned on. However, your battery may also die without much warning. Because of this, we recommend having your battery tested regularly. If we find that it is low, our technicians can replace it for you.
